Chippy - 3D animation and music

The brief for the this project was to create an abstract, 30 second animation. My intial idea was an army of walking computer chips, though this was trimmed back once I realised how little time 30 seconds was – especially if I wanted semi-realistic movement (ie lots of pauses and nothing warp speed). The class was taught using 3DS Max, however I managed to persuade the tutor into letting me use Maya.

Being the keen, young second-year I was (and wanting to show off my primitive Maya skills I’d picked up outside of uni), I went home immediately after the first class and made the guy in the render above.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with the final animation, though I would’ve liked to play around with lighting a bit more. This was the first project I’d used Maya for at uni, and it was quite outside the scope of what I’d played with. I battled with quite a few tools not working how I expected them to (though retrospectively this was just my own ignorance).

I’ll also note that the final video has no editing; everything (except turning frames into a video file) was done in Maya. The music was created by me using Propellerhead’s Reason.
